Rutledge has extensive experience as an advocate for his clients. As a prosecutor, Rutledge led and advised a trial team of approximately 10 prosecutors on crimes such as driving under the influence (DUI), drug trafficking, criminal sexual conduct (CSC), criminal domestic violence (CDV), assault and battery with intent to kill, and murder.
Since 2013, Rutledge has pursued a practice focused in representing injured people and defending the criminally accused. He has successfully helped numerous people recover money damages for injuries caused by others. These damage awards have ranged from thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars via settlement and trial. Rutledge represents clients who have been injured on the job (workers’ compensation), and those who have been injured due to someone else’s negligence such as those who have been injured in car accidents, trucking accidents, premises liability actions, slip and falls, products liability cases, dog bites, dram shop actions and medical malpractice.
As a criminal defense attorney, Rutledge is aided by his extensive experience as a prosecutor. This perspective allows Rutledge to provide clients with unique insight, thoughtful advice and a personalized defense. Rutledge has successfully helped numerous clients navigate the often scary and uncertain waters of the criminal justice system. He stands ready to provide representation and defense to clients on a variety of criminal charges such as those he formerly prosecuted. In addition, Rutledge has a particular emphasis in providing a defense to those who have been charged with DUI.
Rutledge is licensed to practice in all South Carolina state and federal courts. He is a member of the South Carolina Bar (2006), and the Charleston County Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in the U.S. States District Court for the District of South Carolina (2006), and in the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (2006). Rutledge is an active member in the South Carolina Association of Justice “SCAJ” (formerly “South Carolina Trial Lawyers”), and in The South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers “SCACDL.”
